What data does this website contain?

OCP-Ento-Data is an interactive database that attempts to digitally consolidate all operational data collected during the Onchocerciasis Control Program in order to preserve it. Expected visitors include researchers, healthcare professionals, and students.

It includes:

  • Entomological surveillance : Data on the capture and identification of blackflies (1985–2007)
  • Insecticide treatments : Weekly data on treatments applied to West African rivers (1985–2002)
  • Hydrological data : River flow measurements (1990–2000)
  • Research data :
    • studies on blackfly populations;
    • hydrobiology of watercourses in the OCP area;
    • molecular biology (DNA) of blackflies and larvae;
    • sensitivity to insecticides used (1990–2000);
    • evaluations of new insecticide candidates.
  • Comprehensive lists of geographic entities to better understand operational data
    • Blackfly capture points
    • Reaches (river sections)
    • Hydrological stations
    • Rivers and basins
    • Epidemiological assessment villages

There are also many PowerPoint presentations and maps produced where the results tables used to produce these presentations and maps are no longer available. This data has also been added to this site, in image format.

Boundaries
  1. The data available immediately date from 1985, while the OCP program began in 1974. As explained in Entomological Data and OCP, during the early years of the program, computers were not yet in place within the program. The data were processed and stored at WHO headquarters (Geneva)...

  2. Environmental Monitoring There is data on hydrobiological assessments for monitoring non-target wildlife. However, during the implementation of this site, the team did not have a specialist to help integrate this data. And yet, it is relevant in a context of climate change. This data could be useful and serve as baseline data, at least in the Onchocerciasis program workspace...

Données du site

Entomological data

Entomological data constitutes the core of our database. It includes:

  • Captures of adult blackflies per site and per day
  • Identification of blackfly species
  • Parity rate of simulie populations
  • Black fly parasitic loads
  • Blackfly dissection data

Data on treatments

Information on insecticide treatments includes:

  • Types of insecticides used by period
  • Dosages and formulations used
  • Spreading points and treatment frequency
  • Hydrological conditions during treatments
  • Effectiveness of treatments on larval populations

Hydrological data

River hydrological data includes:

  • River flows at capture points
  • Water levels at hydrometric stations
  • Current speed at larval breeding sites
  • Water temperature
  • Physicochemical characteristics of water

Geographic data

The geographic information available is:

  • Coordinates of capture points
  • Location of larval breeding sites
  • Watershed mapping
  • Aerial treatment areas
  • Delimitation of study areas

Sensitivity data

Insecticide susceptibility studies include:

  • Insecticide larval sensitivity tests
  • Monitoring insecticide resistance
  • History of resistance by insecticide test site
